Final Deadline Reminder

The deadline is almost upon us, which means that there's now one day left to finish your fic(s)! Technically, that is, because I'll throw in the same "surprise" mini-extension as I always do, and keep the collection open for submissions until an hour before reveals (which will happen at 00.01 GMT on the 19th).

There's already a very impressive 20 stories in the collection — great job, everyone! Do you think we'll be able to beat the last flash round's total of 27? Best of luck to those who are still writing, you can do it! :Db

I just finished my fic... but have no beta; I don't know anyone in this fandom. I didn't realize until now that there was a surprise not-surprise extension! Wish I'd known... I've been writing like a maniac. But then, I'm also just glad I'm done!

If you can go back and edit it, it’s not quite the same thing as a beta, but when I don’t have time for a beta, I listen to my writing with text to speech. It really helps you find anything that sounds awkward or weird.

Yeah, I started doing that today. It really helps fix errors, I've found. I listen to a lot of DLed fic that way, so I started doing that years ago, when I started writing in fandoms no one heard of (or where the only other fic in a fandom was in another language) and I knew I'd never find a beta.

I never knew anyone did that but me! Glad to know I'm not the only one! <3

I used to just read my work out loud to myself, but I started just subconsciously fixing my mistakes while speaking, so I decided the logical next step was to have someone else read it out loud. Nice to see other people know of this little hack!

Agreed! The one thing it really helps me with is when I use the same word far too many times. (Usually it's "So, ...")

Good job on finishing, but I'm sorry to hear you were all stressed! These final little extensions are something I always do with everything I run, both here and over at eventcentral.

Well, when I said "Wish I'd known...", what I SHOULD have said was "if I participate again, hopefully I'll forget these little extensions that you always do..."

Because, if I had known about it, I would probably have been writing right up to the extended deadline, with no real time to edit. It's just how my wacky ADD brain works: stressy deadlines motivate me, often much more than having weeks or months until deadline.

But I much prefer having time for betaing/editing. So now I'm actually glad I didn't know -- I've had time to refine and streamline, change passive verbiage to active, etc. The fic will be better for me not having known!

Still, it is awesome that you always give a little extension... so thanks for that!

Oh, I'm the exact same way myself! I told myself I would get started with my story for this flash round well in advance, but take a wild guess who started writing just a couple of days before the deadline -_-

I'm really glad the little mini-extension ended up being so useful to you, here's to hoping you forget all about it if you take part again ;D

(BTW, the movie you wrote for sounded very intriguing, so I'm actually downloading it as we speak. I really look forward to watching it, and then reading your fic!)

Oh, yay! But, sadly, movies do not come with AO3 warnings... And I don't want to give spoilers, but a major AO3 warning (and a half, actually) would apply. Should I tell you the major AO3 warnings that would apply, before you watch it? Or are you content to be surprised?

I chose "Choose not to use archive warnings" for my fic - but then I added as tags those that would apply.

All done with writing and uploading and I must confess I've had the most marvelous fun keeping up with this challenge. Thank you so much for organizing it!
