Fandom Promos

Have you already decided what fandom(s) to write for? If so, how about doing a little promoting? :D

We've all chosen tiny obscure canons, needless to say. But by posting here you might be able to entice someone else to give it a try — or perhaps you'll even run into a fellow fan, who can't wait to read your coming fic.

Your promo can be long or short, and contain whatever you feel like. Want to post a couple of intriguing screencaps from a movie? Quote a few paragraphs from a book? Rec the best episode of an anime or a TV series? Talk about why you love your favorite character and/or pairing from your fandom? It's all good; anything goes!

Mine is When You Disappeared, by John Marrs - it's about this guy who walks out on his family, letting them think he's been dead for years, and then about 25 years later he visits his wife and tells her the story of where he's been all this time - she also tells her own story of the same years.

His oldest son from his first marriage is eventually in a successful band, his son from his second marriage is a fan, and the two start corresponding with no idea that they're half brothers, so I've expanded on their story, and continued it after the end of the book, dealing with how they react when they do find out.

I'm writing a crossover for the Octicorn picture books by Kevin Diller and the Nerdycorn picture book by Andrew Root. Coincidentally, both are unicorn-themed and deal with protagonists who are considered weird and don't fit in: Octicorn because he's half-octopus and half-unicorn, and Fern because she is a science nerd. Both books promote the message that it's okay to be different and be true to yourself, and I thought that both Octicorn and Fern (Nerdycorn) could use a friend who understands what it's like to be left out by the in-crowd.

I nominated this fandom for Yuletide last year, but as no one took my request, when I saw this event I decided to write it myself.

It's a fic for the Blur music video "Coffee and TV". The story about Milky, a milk carton that goes on an adventure to find the missing guy whose photo is printed on him. It's a sad and sweet story, and one of my favourite music videos ever. Last year I asked yuletide admins if it was considered RPF, as the missing guy is a member of the band, but I was told no, because he was not playing as himself but as the missing man. After reading the FAQ I decided it was safe to go for it and "trust my judgement". :3
