@reply, with tanks is based on Ilya Repin's painting Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks, which is itself based on the legendary reply of the Cossacks to an ultimatum from Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, Mehmed IV. ("That's how the cossacks answer you, you nasty glob of spit!") The painting has often been used to illustrate defiance, in Russian as well as Ukrainian political commentary - Repin was Russian, and the painting is currently housed in the Hermitage - but the Zaporozhian Cossacks themselves were based around the banks of the lower Dnieper River, in modern Ukraine. The original letter is almost certainly apocryphal.
