The painter Juan de Pareja was born a slave, in the early years of the seventeenth century, in Spain. He served the painter Don Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez: his manumission papers lie in the Archivio di Stato in Rome, and ten of his paintings survive. Elizabeth Borton de Trevino's novel of his life, I, Juan de Pareja, won the Newberry medal in 1966.
